Root Canal Signs: How to Know If You Need Treatment

Root canal treatment has a reputation that is far worse than the reality. Most patients say the procedure is no more uncomfortable than a routine filling. But ignoring the signs that you need one? That is where things get painful — and expensive.

Here are the most reliable warning signs that the pulp inside your tooth is infected or inflamed and needs specialist care.

1. Persistent toothache that doesn’t go away

A toothache that lingers for more than a day or two — especially one that wakes you at night — is not something to wait out. Pain deep in the tooth or jaw that keeps returning after painkillers wear off is a classic sign of pulp infection.

2. Sensitivity that lingers long after hot or cold

It is normal to feel a brief twinge when you eat ice cream or drink hot tea. But if that sensitivity stays for 30 seconds or more after the food or drink is gone, the nerve inside the tooth may be damaged.

3. Darkening of the tooth

A tooth that has turned grey or dark compared to its neighbours is often a sign that the pulp has died. This can happen after a knock or injury that went unnoticed, or as the result of a long-standing infection. You may have no pain at all — which makes it easy to ignore — but the infection is still present inside the tooth and can spread to the surrounding bone.

4. Swollen or tender gums near the tooth

A small pimple-like bump on the gum near a painful tooth is called a dental abscess. It is your body trying to drain the infected fluid. You might also notice swelling in the gum or jaw, or a persistent bad taste in your mouth from the draining pus.

5. Pain when you bite or put pressure on the tooth

If touching the tooth or eating on that side causes sharp pain, the infection has likely spread from the pulp to the ligaments that hold the tooth in the jaw. This tends to mean the infection has been present for some time.

6. A cracked or chipped tooth

A crack in the tooth, even one too small to see, can allow bacteria to reach the pulp. This is especially common after biting on something hard or after an old filling has started to fail. Not every cracked tooth needs a root canal — but it does need to be checked promptly.

What happens if you ignore these signs?

Dental infections do not resolve on their own. Left untreated, an infected tooth can cause the infection to spread to neighbouring teeth, the jaw bone, or in serious cases the throat and neck. The tooth itself is also far more likely to need extraction the longer treatment is delayed — whereas a root canal performed promptly saves the natural tooth entirely.

What does root canal treatment actually involve?

Dr. Priya at Dental Radicle performs root canal treatment under local anaesthetic — you should not feel pain during the procedure, only pressure. The infected pulp is removed, the canals are cleaned and shaped, and the tooth is sealed and usually capped with a crown to restore full strength. Most cases are completed in one or two appointments.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, do not wait. Book an appointment at Dental Radicle in Vignan Nagar and Dr. Priya will assess the tooth and recommend the most conservative treatment possible.
